As the readers are drawn into this simple nonfiction storyline, they learn of the tools used daily by EMTs. The author does an excellent job, making this educational reader a personal experience for the child reading the book. The text draws the reader in immediately with an emergency, a boy having fallen off his bicycle. The photo conveys an urgency but is not too scary for a beginning reader. The urgency of a moving ambulance also helps to keep the readers engaged as they are introduced to various tools and the purposes for those tools used by EMTs. The explanation of the use of a siren and flashing lights to warn surrounding traffic builds vocabulary in a meaningful way. The author continues to relate new items to typically known vocabulary for children at this age. This reader is an excellent addition to the nonfiction library, with a predictable sentence structure and good use of age appropriate vocabulary and images. There is also a photo glossary of the new vocabulary introduced in the book and an index.
